The Itron Water Meter Manual Was Free. Ignoring It Cost Us $5,000.

It was a Tuesday morning in June 2022 when I waved off the delivery truck and stared at the pallet sitting in our utility yard. Forty brand-new Itron smart water meters, shrink-wrapped in plastic. The thermal imaging picked up a hot water line under the crawlspace with a slow drip near the water heater - the kind of leak that wastes hundreds of gallons a month without ever showing itself. But her meter was reporting zero. Not low. Zero.

But my story wasn't even the most expensive mistake in our building that month.
The Chromatography Incident: Agilent Fittings 101
Anjali runs our water quality lab. She's been at it for 12 years and can identify a trace contaminant faster than I can find a parking spot. But when it came time to swap a column on the Agilent HPLC, she decided to save the lab $25 by using a generic fitting she found in a drawer.

This checklist is also specific to our environment: a small municipal utility, mostly residential, primarily Itron equipment. If you're working with a different brand or a different deployment model, your failure modes will be different. I'm not going to pretend there's a one-size-fits-all answer, because there isn't.
What does transfer to any context? When someone on your crew says "I've done this a hundred times," that's the exact moment to ask them to walk you through the wiring diagram. Not as a challenge. As a reminder.
