Itron Smart Metering Q&A: Budget, Compatibility, and the Fluke Multimeter I'd Buy

According to Fluke's product page (fluke.com, accessed May 2025), the 789 can source 4-20 mA loop current. That's the feature that makes it worth the premium for utility field work.

For simple voltage and continuity checks, a Fluke 117 is enough and costs a lot less. Which Fluke multimeter should you buy? If the crew works on electrical panels only, the 117. If they work on process instrumentation, the 789. (note to self: we lost almost a full day before we switched.)

5. Do multimeter leads matter, or can we use the ones in the box?

They matter more than most procurement managers think. The leads that ship with a multimeter are acceptable for clean lab work. In a water utility, they're fighting dirt, moisture, and tight terminal blocks.

I learned this the hard way. I bought a $12 generic lead set to save a few dollars, and the insulation split after two weeks. Then we had to stop the job, order a replacement, and pay for a second site visit. The $12 'savings' cost us about $80 in actual time and shipping.

We now buy silicone-insulated leads with shrouded probes—like the Fluke TL175 or equivalent. They cost more, but they last. In our last order, a quality lead set was $38 per tech. We didn't have a formal budget line for these accessories on our first smart water order. The third time we rushed a sensor bracket order, I finally built a checklist: meters, modules, software, pressure sensors, test leads, mounting hardware, and spare batteries. Should have done that after the first order, not the third.

One more thing: when you order a differential pressure sensor, you need to specify range, output signal, and process connection. A 0-10 psi sensor isn't the same as a 0-100 psi sensor, even if they look identical. We made that mistake once. The vendor wasn't at fault.

7. How long do Itron meter batteries actually last?

Datasheets love to say '20 years.' That's rarely the whole story. The battery design on a smart meter assumes a certain reading interval and a certain number of messages per day. Change those settings, and the theoretical life changes.

On a pilot project, we configured ten meters to report every 5 minutes instead of hourly. The vendor's battery calculation said 12 years, not 20. Good thing we asked. Replacing modules on a buried meter is not cheap—it's the kind of cost that doesn't make it into the ROI model unless you force it in.

So ask for a battery calculation in writing, not just a datasheet. If they can't provide one, expect surprises. We put a battery replacement line in our 10-year capital plan based on that pilot calculation, which is the kind of boring detail that keeps a budget honest.

8. What hidden costs should I check before signing an Itron procurement?

Here's the list I use now:

  • Software licenses—the Itron app and head-end access
  • Communication fees—cellular data plans, network modules
  • Firmware updates—whether they're included in the license
  • Implementation support—'free setup' is rarely free
  • Field test equipment—multimeter leads, pressure sensor test kits

That 'free setup' line cost us $450 in hidden fees on our first contract. The vendor quoted 'setup,' but their definition didn't include integrating the Itron app with our existing billing system. The other vendor's quote was $500 more on paper but included everything. The difference was buried in fine print.

If you take one thing from this: ask for a line-item breakdown and define what each line actually means. It's less exciting than talking about ultrasonic accuracy, but it's the difference between a budget that holds and a budget that bleeds.
