Itron Meter Purchasing FAQ: Questions From Someone Who Actually Buys Them

Where should I start with the Itron water meter catalogue?

Start with the catalogue, but don't start with the prices. I know that sounds backwards. The first time I opened the Itron water meter catalogue, I looked at the photos and thought, "they're all basically the same." They're not. You have residential meters, commercial meters, and meters built for different communication modules. The catalogue lets you filter by size, flow range, connection type, and whether the installation is in a pit or a building.

When I took over purchasing in 2020, I wasted a week comparing prices before I knew what sizes we actually needed. Now I pull a list of existing meters and their connection types first. But if you're already using Itron endpoints and software, staying in the same ecosystem avoids integration headaches. I'm not saying every Itron meter is a no-brainer. I'm saying compare the whole picture before you decide.

What's an absolute encoder PROFINET output, and do I need it?

I had to ask our controls engineer about this one. My job is paperwork, not PLCs. In simple terms, an absolute encoder tells you the exact position of a moving part even after power is lost. When it uses PROFINET, it sends that data over an industrial Ethernet network using the PROFINET protocol.

Do you need it? If your water or gas skid connects to a Siemens-based control system, PROFINET can make integration easier. If you're replacing residential meters, you probably won't need it. Products with an absolute encoder PROFINET output are usually for industrial or network-level measurement, not your average domestic meter.

If you're not sure, ask your automation engineer or the manufacturer before you buy. Changing a communication option after installation is a lot more expensive than choosing the right one at the start.

Should pressure gauges be part of the same metering order?

Pressure gauges are easy to forget because meters measure flow, not pressure. But if you're installing meters as part of a district metering area, pressure monitoring helps you spot leaks and line breaks. I now include pressure gauges on the purchase order when the project calls for pressure monitoring. It saves us a second shipment and keeps the installer from waiting around.

What I should have asked first: what pressure range, connection size, and accuracy do you need? That's beyond my expertise. Have operations or the project engineer spec it out. Don't just order the cheapest gauge from a catalogue because "a pressure gauge is a pressure gauge." It isn't.

Also, pressure gauges sometimes come from a different supplier than the meters. That's fine. The point is to coordinate the order so everything arrives together.

Which Fluke multimeter do I need for field checks?

I get this one from our own field techs. The honest answer is: the one that fits the work you actually do. The first time someone asked me "which Fluke multimeter do I need?" I almost ordered the most expensive model because I thought bigger meant better. Then our lead installer explained that the 117 handles general troubleshooting and non-contact voltage, while the 87V is built for more demanding industrial work.

For utility meter checks, the 117 is probably enough. For motor controls and high-energy equipment, the 87V is a safer choice. Fluke's product selector asks about voltage, current, and environment—use it, then ask someone who will actually carry the meter.

Don't forget accessories. A magnetic hanger and a good set of test leads make a meter a lot safer to use in a tight panel.

How do I explain total cost of ownership to finance?

Use examples, not theories. Finance people are comfortable with numbers, but they don't always know what happens in the field. For one project, I listed the meter price, the communication module, estimated installation time, and expected replacement rate. I also added the integration cost. The conversation changed from "that's expensive" to "what's the payback?"

I also learned to put a number on delays. After the third late delivery from a supplier who promised the moon, I started building buffer time into every project plan. A late meter shipment can mean overtime labor, a missed permit window, and an unhappy customer. That's not a small thing.

The most frustrating part of vendor management is that the same promises get repeated even after they've been missed. I still care about price—I have to. But I no longer pretend the cheapest quote is the cheapest outcome. Bottom line: total cost thinking has saved us more money than any discount I've negotiated.
